Mount Shasta
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.84 $For thousands of years, native inhabitants revered this snowcapped volcano, its craggy peaks, thick forests, crystal waters, and abundant wildlife. “Lonely as god and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California,” Joaquin Miller so eloquently wrote. In the late 1820s, trappers first encountered the mountain, followed later by other explorers and travelers. By the 1870s, early settler Justin Sisson had developed a resort with guided tours to Mount Shasta’s summit. In 1887, after the railroad was completed, the town of Sisson was established at the base of the mountain, where hotels and saloons catered to tourists and lumbermen from nearby mills. South of the mountain, travelers on Southern Pacific’s Shasta Route filled the resorts along the Sacramento River. The new century brought a new mode of travel, the automobile, and a new name for Sisson. “Mount Shasta City” was chosen to reflect the town’s special connection to the mountain.

Mount Shasta: Where Heaven and Earth Meet
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.47 $Towering 14,162 feet above far northern California, Mount Shasta is a landmark comparable to Japan's Mount Fujiyama. Home to California's largest glacier, it is one of the volcanos of the Cascade Range, part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire." This book paints two pictures: a portrait of the many faces and moods of Mount Shasta and a "human mosaic" of writings by, interviews with and pictures of people who have many diverse perspectives on this magnificent mountain. Those who hold the book in their hands will see awesome storm clouds, rainbows and brilliant sunny days; they will hear from people whose words reflect precisely their own feelings about the mountain, and from people whose thoughts could not sound more alien. The book introduces us to each other no matter how we approach the mountain. We hope it will foster a better understanding of the mountain and a kinship among those who know it as a special place, for whatever reasons.

The Mount Shasta Mission
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.77 $In Dancing in the Shadows of the Moon, Machaelle wrote that what happened on Mt. Shasta in 1985 was "a book in itself." Well, here's the book! The Mount Shasta Mission is a story that starts slowly and quietly. Unbeknownst to Machaelle at that time, pieces that were seemingly unconnected but were later critical to the Mission were being put into place. This is where we see the importance of doing what we are supposed to do, even if we don't have a clue about the larger implications. By the time the Naked Man arrives on the scene (yes, there's a naked man in the book) and a commitment to the Mission is made, the story picks up speed and takes on the force of a high-speed train. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be amazed, you'll want to scream, you'll probably even want to slug a few people--but mostly, you'll gain a new appreciation of life and all that is happening around us. And you'll know in new ways just how much we are not alone when we humans are faced with the sometimes daunting task of moving ourselves and our world forward. This book is not for you if: You don't like detail and prefer to read "A miracle occurs here and they all lived happily ever after." The Big Picture scares you. You believe thinking about government and its impact on the social structure around you is beneath you. You like being uninformed. You don't wish to live within your community (immediate and global) more responsibly. You don't want to know how a multi-level project such as the Mt. Shasta Mission is pulled off. You don't have the patience for a story that starts slowly.
